Waters Roar Like Thunder In Buwacag Falls

Sta Ana, Cagayan is famed for its beautiful beaches, but it offers more than coastal escapes. Buwacag Falls is a must-see for those seeking a different kind of water adventure. Nestled in the lush eastern hills of the Sierra Madre mountain range, the falls are located in the heart of Santa Clara, Santa Ana, Cagayan.

Recognized by the Cagayan Provincial Tourism Office as the town’s second top tourist attraction, Buwacag Falls is more than just a multi-tiered cascade—it’s a natural wonder brimming with adventure. To fully appreciate its beauty, visitors must embark on a one-hour trek through rugged terrain, meandering through forests and streams.

Sec. Enrile also highlighted the advantages of using a sustainable energy source for this initiative, including cost-effectiveness, minimal environmental impact, a reduced carbon footprint, and energy self-sufficiency—particularly beneficial for communities like Palaui Island that currently lack an electric source.Upon arrival, the falls greet you with a thunderous roar, a sound that gave the site its name. “Buwacag,” in the local dialect, means thunder, a fitting tribute to the 50-foot falls discovered by two elderly Negritos, Maplit Ortega and Manolo Tugawen.

The adventure begins at the lower level, where clear waters gently flow between massive stones. As you ascend the steep, rocky trail, you’ll encounter a large, calm river pool, perfect for a refreshing swim and a rest. At the highest level, the main waterfall offers a dramatic spectacle—its powerful flow echoes through the surrounding greenery, a testament to nature’s raw power.

A visit to Buwacag Falls is more than just a trek—it’s a cultural journey, rooted in Santa Ana’s rich traditions and breathtaking natural beauty. The falls, a blend of nature’s power and serenity, invite visitors to connect deeply with the environment.

Thanks to the Buwacag Eco-Tourism Association (BETA), a CEZA-supported community organization, this natural wonder not only boosts the local economy of Barangay Santa Clara but also preserves the legacy of past generations for future ones to enjoy.
