CEZA’s Secretary Raul Lambino sees no threat in Smart City project on Fuga Island

The Smart City project by Chinese investors on Fuga Island in the Philippines poses no security threat, according to the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA) as it sought to allay the Philippine Navy’s fear.

“Kung ang gagawin nila ay Smart City, mga hotels, mga condominium, mga mall, hindi ko nakikita na magkaroon ng security threat diyan,” CEZA Administrator Raul Lambino said in an interview on Dobol B sa News TV on Thursday.

The Philippine Navy on Monday raised concern over the reported plan by Chinese investors to develop three strategic islands of the Philippines, including Fuga Island.

However, Lambino said if the projects involved vessels or factories, he will definitely oppose it.

“Siguro kung ang ilalagay na investment diyan ay pagawaan ng barko, pagawaan ng pabrika na sa tingin natin maaalanganin ang Pilipinas ay huwag nating payagan.”

The development projects in Philippine strategic islands Fuga, Grande and Chiquita Island are being closely monitored after security concerns were raised due to reports of involvement of Chinese investors in the projects.

These island areas are considered access ways to Scarborough Shoal and other areas in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

Navy spokesman Captain Jonathan Zata said security implications of this plan should be considered, adding Philippine security forces should still have access to these strategic islands.

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said he is also looking into this plan. —Joviland Rita/KBK, GMA News
